Prevention Training January 14-16 2020

On January 14-16th 2020 SFNFCI held its three day Facilitating Life Skills Development training. We had 24 learners complete this training from seven First Nation Agencies and three communities including; Agency Chiefs Child and Family Services INC., Awasisak Nikan CFS, Birch Narrows Dene Nation, Kanaweyimik CFS, Meadow Lake Tribal Council, Ministikwan Lake Cree Nation, Onion Lake Family Services, Peter Ballantyne CFS INC., Sweetgrass First Nation, and Touchwood CFS INC. This training was facilitated by Marlene Mirasty, R.N.

This course is designed to equip participants with knowledge, skills and resources to assist clients in developing life skills to manage their children and their home. Participants will examine their own life skill strengths and the value of modelling positive, healthy life skills. Following the training learners should be able to:

1. Engage clients in conversations about their current life skills strengths.

2. Assess their clients’ knowledge and abilities related to various life skills.

3. Coach clients to develop various life skills.

4. Model positive, healthy life skills.

5. Work from a strengths-based, trauma-informed perspective when working with clients.

Key Competencies

Key competencies are defined as the knowledge, skills and abilities that are needed to work effectively as Prevention workers. This module is designed to equip you:

1. To gain the knowledge, skills and resources needed to effectively assist clients in developing life skills.

2. To assess client’s current life skills and assist them to identify areas that they need to gain knowledge and skills in.

3. To work within a strengths-based and trauma-informed perspective with clients.

4. To apply coaching techniques in order to assist clients to develop life skills.
