Prevention Network Meeting September 9, 2021

The Saskatchewan First Nations Child & Family Service Agency prevention network has been in existence since May 2015. The network gathers regularly to share practices, successes, challenges and to provide guidance to approved SFNFCI prevention projects. SFNFCI coordinates the meetings of the network.

The Prevention Network met in-person in the SFNFCI classroom on September 9, 2021. Microsoft Teams meeting platform was used to make the meeting accessible online for participants who were not able to attend in-person. There were 13 participants in attendance representing five agencies. Attendance also included SFNFCI staff and Elder Ernestine Starr. It was our first meeting combining both in-person and online participants and it went smoothly. It is great to know that are we have become more comfortable with online meeting platforms and that these can be used to assist in gathering us together and facilitating discussion.

At every meeting, during the roundtable, an opportunity is given for every prevention worker and agency in attendance to share the work taking place within their community. The roundtable at this meeting provided lots of good information. We heard about summer activities, grief and loss programming, mental health activities, and agencies that are in the process of revising workplans that will carry them through until the end of the year.

After the roundtable invited guests and SFNFCI staff made presentations and provided updates. Anuja Thapa, SFNFCI researcher, shared results from the Disabilities Research Project 2020-21 - Exploring Case Management Systems. She also talked about the FASD learning series, and she introduced an autism series which begins October 27,2021. You can register for the autism series here: http://www.sfnfci.ca/events/details/session-1-introduction-to-autism-spectrum-disorder-asd.html

We also had updates on the Prevention curriculum from Scott Stephens, the Prevention Policy and Standards from Shelley Thomas-Prokop, and David Bird talked about the Prevention Gathering and upcoming trainings and webinars. The discussion on Prevention Standards and Policy led to an invitation for volunteers to participate in a committee to review the polices and standards, four members were identified.
