First Nations Group Homes Receive HR Training

First Nations Group Home workers received Competency Based Human Resource training on March 25, 2015 from the Saskatchewan First Nations Family and Community Institute. This was an area that the First Nations group home workers identified as an area to improve capacity for their operations.

An introduction and overview of the following Human Resources topics were discussed:

  • HR Planning,
  • Recruitment,
  • Selection & Staffing,
  • Orientation & Onboarding,
  • Performance Management & Corrective Action,
  • Learning & Development, and
  • Compensation & Benefits.

Elder Rose Atimoyoo opened the day with a prayer.  Exercises were built into each of the topics to help demonstrate how to implement and further develop consistent, transparent and fair human resource practices.

Best practices in the areas of policies and user-friendly form templates for documenting human resource practices in the mentioned areas were provided as sample handouts to assist participants in further developing HR tools for their First Nations Group Homes.

The following feedback was provided by participants:

“Now that I am working closer to all the employees and at times they need to report to me, it will help me to approach situations and staffing.  It was a great day of learning new information and the handouts will also help me out on doing my job right.”
-Sheena Throassie, Team Manager Athabasca Therapeutic Youth Care Home

“Gave me a better understanding and more information on rights of employees and the employer.  Thanks.”
-Debbie Shingoose, Administrator Pi-Kiwek Cote Group Home Inc.

“Very informational, making our organizations more effective for the purposes.”
-Misty Whitstone, Program Manager Onion Lake Child Youth Care Home

Elder Rose Atimoyoo closed the day with a thank you prayer.

Participants represented the following First Nations Group Homes:  Onion Lake, Athabasca, Pi-Kiwek, and Agency Chiefs.
