Empowering Today, Inspiring Tomorrow: Building Hope for Long-Term and Continuing Care March 6, 2024

On March 6th, 2024, SFNFCI proudly hosted a knowledge sharing forum for long-term and continuing care (LTCC) at Prairieland Park for a second year. Differing from last year, the forum was a one day, in person event. This year’s LTCC Forum exhibited a small trade show which included many community-based organizations displaying their resources for attendees to gather information and explore networking opportunities. Some of the trade show exhibitors included MS Canada, Talking Stick, the Prevention Institute and many more.

The LTCC Forum had approximately 130 attendees. The attendees worked in sectors such as the Federal government, Community based organizations, the health sector, and First Nations Organizations. Over half of the registered attendees represented First Nations organizations whether it was from the prevention, health, or social sectors. Attendees’ occupations ranged from directors and analysts to frontline workers such as safe home workers and care aides. Elder Wally Awasis joined us for the day, he opened the forum with a prayer and shared his knowledge to begin the day in a good way.

The Long-Term and Continuing Care forum was centered around three panel sessions and ended the day by providing education on trauma informed care. Panel one consisted of representatives from FSIN, AFN and CLSD who gave updates on their respective organizations. Panel two consisted of representatives from ISC who spoke about programs such as assisted living, post-majority care and Jordans Principle. The third and final panel was focused on mental health and addictions and had representatives from community-based organizations such as Residents in Recovery, Saskatchewan Health Authority, and EGADZ. EGADZ spoke about their experiences in working with youth and representatives from Saskatchewan Health Authority spoke about aging through the system.

The day ended with an educational session with Cindy Deschenes from the Crisis and Trauma Informed Institute. Cindy spoke about residential schools, trauma, the effects of trauma, and the importance of self-care. Cindy had the attendees moving and socializing and reflecting on what trauma is and how to navigate it in ourselves, and others.

The presentation on trauma informed care was a direct result of the feedback from the previous year’s LTCC forum. SFNFCI acknowledged previous attendees’ desire for more information on trauma informed care and SFNFCI was honoured to be able to provide the necessary education and information based on the feedback.

The Long-Term and Continuing Care forum provided an amazing opportunity for various sectors to network, learn, and share their knowledge with one another. Thank you to all the organizations that participated and shared their knowledge and expertise. A special thank you to all the SFNFCI staff who worked together to create such a wonderful event, we look forward to continuing to share our knowledge!
