Communication Skills - November 6-7, 2024

Communication Skills Training Recap

On November 6-7, 2024, the Saskatchewan First Nations Family and Community Institute (SFNFCI) hosted a training session on Communication Skills in our on-site classroom. The course was facilitated by Charlotte Ross, with Elder support provided by Wallace "Wally" Awasis. Twenty participants from communities such as Ahtahkakoop, Big River, Cote, Cowessess, English River, Little Pine, Montreal Lake, Shoal Lake, and Stony Rapids attended and completed the training.

Our facilitator, Charlotte Ross, is a Cree Language Instructor and Consultant with extensive experience working with Saskatchewan First Nations, tribal councils, non-profits, and post-secondary institutions. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Indigenous Language Revitalization at the University of Victoria, Charlotte’s expertise and passion for facilitation created an engaging and interactive learning environment.

Our Elder Wallace James Awasis is from Thunderchild First Nation, in Saskatchewan. He is well known for promoting social action based on the principle of peaceful co-existence, a principle that he was taught by his elders and leaders. Wally considers himself very lucky to have met elders who introduced him to Plains-style ways: drumming and singing, Sweat Lodge, Powwow, and Sun Dance. These elders taught Wally that "culture is healing." He is a strong believer that Culture is embedded in language. Wally enjoys sharing Indigenous knowledge as a path towards a brighter future for our next generations.

Communication Skills is a 12-hour course conducted over two days, focusing on fundamental communication skills. Participants explored their own communication styles and learned key aspects of effective communication, including listening with empathy, responding with patience, and understanding the impact of non-verbal cues. They practiced applying these skills to build positive relationships, engage in motivational interviewing, and navigate challenging situations with difficult individuals, especially during crises or conflicts.

Participants were encouraged to draw from their experiences, share insights, and exchange best practices within the group. Here’s a glimpse of their feedback:

  • Overall Experience: "Everything was covered to provide a better understanding of communication."
  • Valuable Takeaway: One participant shared, "I am going to think about what impact my words have on others," while another mentioned the importance of "Active listening."
  • Application to Work: When asked how the training will benefit them and their organization, a participant replied, "Enhance my communication skills." Another added, "It will help in situations where the client may be having an off day."

We are grateful for the participation and enthusiasm of everyone who attended. Thank you to all who joined us for the Communication Skills training!
