Managing Multiple Priorities and Communication Skills (IA Working Group)

Managing Multiple Priorities

On July 12th SFNFCI hosted Managing Multiple Priorities in our classroom. The course was facilitated by Charlotte Ross and elder support was provided by Cecile Smith. We had 11 participants complete the training course out of the 15 that were registered. The group travelled from communities such as Sturgeon Lake, Onion Lake, Meadow Lake, Wollaston Lake, and Peter Ballantyne.

Managing Multiple Priorities provides suggestions about managing time. Time management skills often include managing conflicting priorities and dealing with instant challenges that happen in the workplace every day. Suggestions are provided for setting priorities, getting organized, managing your time, and achieving your goals.

When asked how their communities/organizations will benefit from what they learned, participants responded:

“I will benefit from what I’ve learned today by utilizing it in my work and home life. How to prioritize my work load and it will be less chaotic.”

“This will help me with my time, setting goals, etc.”

“Hoping to be more organized, prioritizing tasks and making me less stressed at work.”

Communication Skills

On August 9th and 10th SFNFCI hosted Communication Skills in our classroom. The course was facilitated by Charlotte Ross and elder support was provided by Wallace Awasis. We had 15 participants complete the training course out of the 16 that were registered. The group travelled from communities such as Big Island Lake, Geroge Gordon, Ministikwan Lake, Meadow Lake, Clearwater River, Standing Buffalo, Yorkton, and Witchekan Lake.

This two-day training focused on basic communication skills. Participants examined their own communication styles; learned key elements of communication including listening with empathy, responding with patience, and impacts of non-verbal communication; how to apply effective communication skills to build positive relationships; motivational interviewing; and using impactful communication skills when dealing with difficult or resistant clients or during crisis or conflicts.

When asked how their communities/organizations will benefit from what they learned, participants responded:

“It will help me communicate better with clients. Also reminding myself that everyone does not fit in the same box.”

“I will be able to communicate more effectively with clients and find suitable training and employment for them. “

Participants agreed that the course material and facilitation were beneficial and informative. Many expressed that they learned more about themselves, their communication styles and how to be an active listener. Participants felt that colleagues, family members and friends could benefit from taking the Communication Skills training.
