Calming Through Connection: De-escalation Strategies
SFNFCI hosted Calming Through Connection: De-escalation Strategies on February 13-14, 2024. Training was facilitated by Taylor Baier from Oaks Mental Health and elder support was provided by Wally Awasis. Day 1 of Calming Through Connection took place at our SFNFCI classroom and Day 2 took place at Smiley’s. We had a total of 16 participants complete the course. They travelled from 9 communities across Saskatchewan, such as Ahtahkakoop, Beardy’s and Okemasis, Little Pine, Mistawasis, Pelican Lake, Standing Buffalo, Waterhen, and Whitecap.
On Day 1 of training participants learned about theoretical background. Other topics of focus were emotional safety, the role of trauma, the cycle of escalation, and compassionate boundaries. On Day 2 of training, we practiced de-escalation skills. We learned about our own emotional regulation and strategies for regulating our emotions in response to others. Other topics that were taught were co-regulation and de-escalation framework.
When we asked our participants how the information they learned in Calming Through Connection: De-escalation Strategies will benefit them and their organization, some answers we received were.
“I really enjoyed the workshop; it will help me in my current job. The role playing is/was real life experiences I had with clients I work with.”
“Being able to learn from others and hear about their experiences. Sharing this learning experience with a group of likeminded people. I appreciate the validation I gained from listening and reflecting on my own experiences.”
“A story from the elder and the song that went with it (training).” – participant speaking about elder Wally Awasis and how he contributed his knowledge in relation to training.
“De-escalation with clients and how to handle the aftermath of the situation.”
