On September 14-16, 2021, SFNFCI hosted Board Training at the Saskatoon Inn. SFNFCI is very excited that we were able to meet in person while adhering to SHA guidelines that kept everyone’s safety and health in mind. There were 27 learners who participated in Board Training and 24 who completed and are eligible for certification for the training.
Participants attended from various agencies within Saskatchewan First Nations that included Sturgeon Lake CFS, Nechapanuk Centre CFS, Agency Chiefs CFS, and Montreal Lake Child and Family Agency.
The training was facilitated by Charlotte Ross. Charlotte Ross is a Cree language instructor and Consultant with years of experience working with Saskatchewan First Nations, Tribal Councils, non-profit corporations, and post-secondary institutions. Charlotte is currently working on her PHD in Indigenous Language Revitalization at the University of Victoria.
SFNFCI offers board training that provides agency Boards of Directors with the necessary tools that enable them to be effective FN CFS boards members in their communities and agencies. The focus of the training is on increasing the members’ ability to perform board-related tasks, support the Agency and the community, influence key stakeholders and move the Agency further towards the mission of strengthening and providing support to families. The course is divided into three sections:
• Governance Environment
• Board Governance Basics
• Governance Support and Management
Each section of the course can be completed in one day. There are learning activities (individual and group) embedded throughout each section. A final learning activity scenario is at the end of each section.
