The Institute is a non-profit organization, incorporated under the Saskatchewan Non-Profit Corporations Act. The Institute provides professional services to First Nations Child and Family Services Agencies who provide child protection and prevention services in First Nations communities.
According to SFNFCI Bylaws, Delegated First Nations Child and Family Services Agencies can become voting members for SFNFCI.
There are 19 Delegated FNCFS agencies in Saskatchewan. There are some communities that have signed Prevention Protocols with the Ministry of Social Services where the MSS provide child protection services and the community provides child prevention services.
The Institute has one class of members: voting members. Currently, 17 of the 19 Delegated First Nations Child and Family Service Agencies in Saskatchewan are members.

The Institute works very closely with the First Nations Group Homes in Saskatchewan. The Board of Directors and Staff of the First Nations Group Homes are often involved in many of the activities and professional development services that the Institute undertakes to assist in building capacity for First Nations Child Welfare workers.
