January 27-30, 2026, SFNFCI will be offering full SDM (Structured Decision Making) Training for workers in protection. The training is a combination of when and how to use the SDM assessments at different decision points in the life of a case.
SDM is a case management system used in the delivery of child protection services. The SDM system is comprised of six assessment tools: Intake Assessment; Safety Assessment; Risk Assessment; Family Strengths and Needs Assessment; Risk Reassessment; and Reunification Assessment.
The SDM model has laid out several core objectives: structure critical decision points; increased consistency in decision making; increased accuracy in decision making, and to inform policy and practice using data to improve case practice.

NOTE: 100% attendance is required to receive course certification.
Learner Expectations:
- Be aware that the training is 4 days, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Turning off your phones or putting them on silent throughout the training is expected
- Be ‘present’ and minimize distractions around you, you must participate in 100% of the course to receive your certificate of completion
- Demonstrate respectful behavior, remember all discussions are confidential
- Be prepared to listen and ask questions
- Bring paper and pen
