Rights of Children in a First Nations Group Home Setting

Course Objectives
This one-day course focuses on the Rights of Children. Participants will review standards, policies and Acts of Legislation that are specific to the development and maintenance of children rights. Documents include: The Customary Standards of Care Section: 2, Rights of Children; United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children (UNCRC); United Nations Declarations on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP); MSS Duty to Report; FSIN Child Welfare and Family Support Act; MSS Child & Family Services Act and the role of the Advocate for Children and Youth. Learners will have the opportunity to discuss and participate in exercises demonstrating the rights and how to ensure children and youth are aware of their rights.
Key Competencies
- To demonstrate an understanding of the policies identified in Section 2: Rights of Children in the Customary Standards of Care (CSC) manual.
- To employ required skills to help children and youth understand their rights as identified in the policies and standards (Section 2: Rights of Children) in the Customary Standards of Care manual.
- To demonstrate an understanding of United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children (UNCRC), United Nations Declarations on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP), Duty to Report, and FSIN Child Welfare and Family Support Act/MSS Child Act
- To employ required skills to ensure that the standards, criteria and indictors stated in Section 2: Rights of Children in the Customary Standards of Care manual are adhered to and respected in the First Nations Group Home.
- To recognize, enable and give children and youth in a group home a voice.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the advocate for children and youth.
