FNCFS Board Media Training
Date: February 24-25, 2026
Time: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
Cost: $700/person
Location: Prairieland Park – Saskatoon, SK
This training will provide Board members with the information they need to become effective spokespersons for the Board and their agencies. The course is relevant to individuals who have little to intermediate experience working with the media.
Training is tailored to the subjects and topics SFNFCI Board spokespersons may be required to deal with in their day-to-day roles. It will include crisis scenarios so that Board members are prepared to respond when/if a real situation occurs.
The training will be conducted in two days in person and will take place in two parts:
Part I: PowerPoint Presentation
- ▪ Understanding the Media – Who the media are; their role, their culture, and how they work. Types of media (news, travel, formal documentaries) and their needs
- Regional, national, mainstream, and niche media and how they differ.
- How reporters solicit information and various reporting styles.
- The “anatomy” of a news story, what makes news, what makes it interesting, what keeps it going in the news.
- The Role of the Spokesperson – What is the role and how to fulfill it for your organization.
- Preparing for an Interview – Pre-recorded and live television and radio, print, and online – how to prepare for each format.
- Spokesperson Skills – How to speak confidently and skillfully and use bridging techniques, speaking in the SFNFCI voice.
- Answering Questions Effectively – How to prepare key messages and share them effectively, and tailor them to a wide audience; how to handle a crisis or emergency, and how to prepare for challenging and/or unexpected questions.
Participants will be provided with a digital copy of the training materials and the PowerPoint presentation slides on which they can make notes.
Part II: Mock Interviews
▪ Media Interview Skills Training – Mock interviews will be run with participants to provide them an opportunity to practice responding to a media enquiry. Coaching and feedback will be provided to each participant.
Note: 100% attendance is required to receive course certification.
